REALHOLO

REALHOLO

Development of next-Generation MEMS-based Spatial Light Modulator. The REALHOLO project aims to advance mixed reality (MR) environments by developing a new type of spatial light modulator (SLM) using fast, piston-type micro-mirrors. Offering superior optical features, this technology is designed to provide a natural visual experience without physiological side effects like eye fatigue and motion sickness, which are common with current stereoscopic 3D technologies.

The consortium behind REALHOLO spans the complete value chain, from CMOS backplane design and MEMS fabrication to optical system integration and application demonstrators. REALHOLO will deliver a high-resolution, high-frame-rate MMA-based SLM and integrate it into holographic projection demonstrators for medical mixed-reality head-up and head-mounted displays as well as advanced structured-illumination and sensing systems. In doing so, the project paves the way for commercially viable, European real holographic display technology addressing markets from medical imaging and automotive to industrial metrology and beyond.

HOLOEYE tasks in the project

Within REALHOLO, HOLOEYE contributes its long-standing expertise in spatial light modulators and holographic projection applications. HOLOEYE will assist the project partners for developing the driving of the SLMs, perform performance characterization of the SLM, and develop a demonstration use-case for structured illumination. Key-parameters will be characterized in application-relevant setups for system optimization. For structured illumination we will build a demonstrator capable of high-speed projection of complex 2D holographic patterns and showcase its potential for high-performance 3D measurement and sensing applications.
